Col. St. John, Fort Galatea, datinj to the 20th. The weather had been so inclement that the march of troop for Runanga had been delayed. \ further news of Te Kooti's band, i of the other Hauhaus, had been r ceived by this opportucity. Ds patches had been taken by Mr M» Donald, overseer to Mr Cox, froi Haroto to Fort Galatea, and tto just arrived were brought on by li gade-Major Birch to Pohui, ami thence telegraphed. Col. St. John reports that Cornel Smith of the Bay of Plenty Voluntefl Cavalry, who was in commands! the party surprised at Opipi, U arrived at Fort Galatea after belt lost for ten days. He was supposed to have been killed. It seems tk on the day following the surprise i his party, he was taken prisoner to three natives of Kooti's band, wl tied lrui with flax to a tree. Intlii state he remained for four days, li the rain having softened the flax, I managed first to extricate one haul and then released himself. He the wandered about for five days nwni subsisting all the time on grass, aii at length managed to reach Galatea He is doing well, notwithstanding the almost unparalleled hardship he has undergone for ten days in thai rigorous climate at this inclemeU season of the year.
