Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. THURSDAY, JUNE 17, 1869.

A meeting of the Hawte's Bay Brewing Company is convened for this evening at 7 o'clock. The English Mail may be expected to arrive here by the s.s. Lord Ashley on Saturday next. Sir George Bowen was a passenger by the s.s Lord Ashley on Tuesday last, en route for Wellington. His Excellency spent a short time on shore.

The following steameis will be due here during the course of the next few da s :—From Auckland——Wellington, to-morrow ; Star of the South, early. From Wellington - -Loid Ashley, on Saturday next (with English Mail); and Kangitira, on Tuesday next. Fire.—Y esterday moi ning at about 3 o'clock a tire broke out in the workshop of Mr N. Williams, Hastings-street, which destroyed that building and a stable in the rear of the Bank of New Zealand, and at one time seriously threatened the destruction of the whole block of buildings in its vicinitv including the Bank of New Zealand; but by the united and vigorous efforts of any number of hearty workers and abundance of water collected from the late rains, it was speedily got under. Here, again, a concatenation of fortunate circumstances has saved the principal business part of Napier from destruction, for not only was the tire quickly discovered, and help and water at hand, but all the buildings had but lust before been thoroughly wetted by a very heavy rainfall, which occurred soon after midnight. Nothing is known as to the origin of the lire, but an inquest will be held on it to-morrow. Mr Williams is partly insured, still his loss will amount to over £SOO. He wishes to express his grateful feeljjngs to his neighours, by whose 'strenuous exertions only his loss was prevented from being much worse.

Tne cause of this sudden disappear* ance on the pirt of the person alluded to, !is said to bo owing to a discovery having I been recently made of a great deficiency on his part in the funds of a local institution, and of which for some very considerable time he was a leading member. We will wait for a few days in order to ascer tain further particulars of the above, as the numerous reports ean scarcely be depended I upon. However, it seems beyond a doubt J that the gcntlemau in question has gone/'
