WAIROA.
An Orderly shot by Hauhaus. Despatches from Colonel Herrick were received at 1 p.m. on Saturday, dated 10th June. He reports that an orderly carrying despatches between Wairoa and the Lake, was riding in company with a carpenter on Thursday morning, between the camp at Te Kiwi and Onepoto, about three miles from the latter, when they were fired at by about 7 Hauhaus. The orderly was shot dead, as also the carpenter's horse. The carpenter escaped by jumping on the orderly's horse and galloping back to the Kiwi camp. The Ipoor orderly's name was Newnham, lately stationed with No. 3 Division AC. at Poverty Bay. The enemy tomahawked him, and rifled his pockets, currying off his despatches. Henare Tomoana was at Waikarimoana, and had offered Col. Herrick to send up a large force of his men aa soon as the boats were ready.
