WAIKATO.
(Prom the Correspondent of the Southern Cross.) Alexandra, May 31, 10.40 a.m. Mr Firth and party arrived at Louis Hettit's at a quarter past four o'clock yesterday afternoon. Letters of an unmis takably peaceable character have been received from Messrs Davis and others. Tawhiao was made aware yesterday morning that Prince Alfred had prolonged his stay in order to have an interview with him and his party at Ngaruawahia. I have undoubtedly good authority for stating that Tawhiao has expressed his desire to meet the Prince. The Pioneer party of fifty natives returned from Ngaruawahia because they had heard that the Prince would not visit the Waik:ito. It 13 stated here that if the Prince leaves Auckland without visiting the Waikato and having an interview with Tawhiao's party, Tawhiao will not meet his Excellency the Governor. The wholo of the party with Mr Firth were most hospitably treated at Hettit's. 11.40 a.m. A messenger from the Governor has arrived. Sophia is still absent. Manuhiri wishes Mr Firth to visit Tokangamutu; but Rewi refuss to permit the aulcati to be so signally broken. Manuhiri will consequently see Mr Firth to-day at Louis Hettit's. 1 p.tn There is a messenger now on his way to To Wheoro with an answer from Tawhiao. The King natives have received information that Sophia has left Ohinemuri, and is now on her way to Tokan^amutu. (From the Now Zealand Herald Correspondent.) Ngartjawauia, June 1, 11.5 a.m. There is already a large assemblage of natives here, gradually increasing from out-dis!ricts. A messenger has arrived from the Hauhaus stating that they wait the arrival of Sophia, who left Maungatautari last night for Hangitaki. A meeting of settlers was held here yesterday evening to protest against the action taken in native matters by private individuals, and to petition the Governor to put an immediate stop to the unoalledfor interference of Messrs. C. O. Davis, J. C Firth, and others, who are already complicating matters. It is generally believed that the meeting will be a failure.
