Arrival of the Star of the South. The s.s. Star of the South, Captain W. Bendall, left Auckland at 8 p.m. on Wednesday last, 2nd June. Experienced strong easterly winds and heavy sea, attended with rain, until rounding the East Cape at 4 a.m. on Friday. Erom thence to Tologa Bay experienced light winds and calms ; arrived there at 11 a.m.; landed Mr Eeeves and Miss Clovpr, and some stores; and proceeded on her voyage at 3 p.m. Arrived in the roadstead at 5 a.m. on Saturday, and entered the Iron Pot at 1 p.m. • Captain Bendall reports having passed the s.s. Ahuriri off Table Cape, atfd the Lord Ashley off Portland Island, on Friday night. The Star leaves again for Auckland to-morrow evening. Arrival of the Lord Ashley The s.s. Lord Ashley, Captain Worsp, left Wellington at 12.20 p.m. on Friday last, and arrived here at 3.30 p.m. on Saturday, steaming for Auckland at 4 p.m. Thus it will be seen that the visit of this vessel to our port was exceedingly brief. She landed her mails and one or two passengers, and took one or two passengers on board, but wjthout luggage or anything of that kind. She $4 not enter or clear at the Customs, nor did she
land any cargo (of which there were ahout 40 tons on board) for this port. An attempt was made by the local agents to detain her a short time for that purpose, but it proved unsuccessful. Owing also to the ill-advised step of the Government in removing the Chief Post Office from the Spit, the Lord Ashley left without the mail for Auckland, which could not be got down from the town office in time for her. Miscellaneous. The s.s. Ahuriri steamed for Auckland at 1 p.m. on Friday last, with wool, hides, &c. The cutter Grayling cleared at the Customs on Friday last, and will probably leave for Wairoa today. The p.s. Sturt, from Wairoa, arrived here at 8 o'clock last evening. The s.s. St. Kilda, from "Wairoa, may be hourly expected to arrive lipre.
