THE SOUTH.
By the s s. Ahuriri we have our usual files from Wellington and Southern Ports. The Evening Post publishes the following telegram :—"Blenheim, May 29, 3 3S p.m. There was a graat five at Havelock on May 27. The M tsonic Hotel and the Bank, occupied by Moeller, storekeeper, are completely destroyed. The origiu of the fire is unknown." A destructive fire took place in Beachstreet, Waikouaiti, on the 19th ult., by which the entire premises and stock of Mr 15. W. Burden were totally destroyed. Report says that the Mokau natives will fight the Europeans at the end of June—not before. The attempt to transport young trout from Qneeus'.o.vii to Bunediu has been ua« successful. The distribution of prizes to the Otago volunteers took place on the 24th ult. Two men at Dunedin have been sent to gaol for fourteen days for assaulting the ftev. D. Stuirt, whilst officiating at a funeral in the cemetery. The town of Blenheim has been proclaimed a borough under the Municipal Corporation Act. Under the heading " The Alpacas," the Wellington Independent, May 27, has the following :—We observe by the Provincial Government Gazette that two tenders have been received by the Government for the purchase of these animals, one by tho Otago Acclimitization Society offering £3O for three, »>nd the other by Mr John Harding, who offered £lO for four. Bo;h tenders have been refused. In Wanganui, bread is quoted at 7d per t-pound loaf. Mr Travera announced himself on May _ ; 7, in the colum sof the Independent, as i candidate for the City of Wellington at the next election for the House of Kepre* •>er tatives. His platform is self-reliance. We (Kvening Post) are sorry to learn that Mr Anderson, of the Independent, has oeen Buffering from a severe attack of inflammation in the eyes. Dr Boor is atlendi: g him, and he is now beginning to recover sLwlv. We have heard (says the Wairarapa tfurcun) that it is in contemplation to put requisitions in circulation soliciting Mr Peaice to eomo forward to represent this listrict in the General Assemmv should a dissolution take place, as is expected, soon after the meeting of the Assembly. The Wairarapa Mercury, 27th May, relates the following :—At a court held at bVatheraton a short time back, when there .\ere five justices on the bench, a curious incide t was observed of one of the magist atcs (s. lie vans, Esq., J.P. ; ) who deliberate y lighted his pipe, and smoked it while .sLtfi'g i'i judgment on a civil case. We ■ shouid imagine this to be the very highest pitch to which the otium mm dignUafa c- ud bo brought.
