The Inner Harbor this morning presents a particularly bare appearance, —the cutter Grayling being the only vessel inside. The English Mail closes on Sunday next, at 10 a.m. at the Chief Post Office, and at 9 a.m. at the Branch Office, Spit. Appointment.—His Excellency the Governor has been pleased to appoint William Burnett to be Ensign in the Napier Militia; date of commission, 18Ih April, 1869. Monday last, being the Queen's birthday, was kept as a holiday by most people. The usual feu de joie was fired by the 18th Regiment. There was, however, no sports or amusements of a general character, beyond the ball in the Oddfellows' Hall, referred to elsewhere. Oddfellows' Ball.—The anniversary of the Napier Lodge of Independent Order of Oddfellows, M.U., was celebrated by a ball, which came off on the evening of Monday last, 24th May, in the Oddfellows' Hall, which, by the way, is a splendid building for such purposes. There were between thirty and thirty-five couple present, all of seemed to enjoy themselves thoroughly. The dancing commenc ed about 9 o'clock, and was kept with unlagging spirit till the appearance of the grey dawn of Tuesday. The music was furnished by the Napier Brass Band, and is admitted to have been of no ordinary character. One of the pieces, we learn, was composed by a lady resident in Napier, and was played for the first time on Monday night. All speak in high terms of the quantity and quality of the refreshments, and of the excellence, of the arrangements generally. Altogether the anniversary ball was a great success. J
Artesian Well for the Eastern Spit.—Such of our readers who are
not already aware of the fact, will be pleased to learn that an artesian Iwell is now being bored on the Eastern Spit, in rear of the Commercial Hotel. La-st evening, a depth of 80 feet had been attained—the ground being a moist clay. This evening, at half-past 7 o'clock, a meeting of those interested in the above will take place in the Commercial Hotel, when we hope to see a good attendance.
