How the Maoris Evade the Toll.—A curious disclosure was made in the Council on Friday last. It will be remembered that when the Toll-gate Bill was passing through the Council one of the objections used against it was that it would be almost impossible to obtain the rate from natives ; and this argument received striking confirmation from the petition of Mr Boddington, late Toll-gate keeper. It was there stated that it had been impressed upon the natives by the Government that any of them passing through the gate on Government service were exempt from the toll; and this excuse was almost universally used by them. As he had no means of putting their statement to the test, he had been obliged to accept it, and consequently most of the natives have passed toll free !
