Wellington, May 5. Prizes for Gold-fieldß Essays have been awarded to Mr Eyton and Captain Hutton, of Auckland; and Mr Gillon, of "Wellington. May 6. The Maori King and peveral Wanganui chiefs are passengers by the Lord Ashley for Auckland. The Wellington Provincial Council has been dissolved. The Provincial Council of Marlborough has been opened. That body petition for a re-arrangement; the Government form to be presented to the Assembly. It is rumored that the next session of the Genera] Assembly will be opened by commission. James O'Neill, Esq., of Auckland, and Wm Robinson, Esq., of Cheviot, have been called to the Legislative Council.

The following telegram lias been kindly handed to us by the Government : "Wellington, May 0. Letters from Colonel Lyon of the 7th mm. [Friday last.] He had just returned from an expedition up the Patea. He has been 20 miles by land, and could get no further except by canoe. The Ngatiporous behaved admirably; they killed four of the Pakakohe natives. Only one settlement was destroyed, the occupants of which retreated up the river in canoes. Ngatiporou anxious to remain and occupy the country, but wish for 70 or 80 more of their people, with their women and children. Hatiwhero wishes to go back and get them, buD as the land it? already under offer to Kemp and his people we cannot now conclude arrangements. Col. Lyon is collecting canoes for a further search. No sign of the Lyttelton yet.
