Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addietus jurare in verba magistri. MONDAY,MAY 3,1869.

A step in the right direction has; Tbeen taken by rhe Government in the appointment of Captain Humfrey to the office of Acting Adjutants This gentleman, who is late of the93rd Regiment, has seen much service in India and on the African Coast. We intimated in our last that greater stringency would be adopted; in enforcing attendance at the several drills. Those for the town companies are arranged to commence tomorrow morning at 7 o'clock, and. those concerned would do well to attend at that hour sharp, so as toget away by 8. The hours at which, the various country companies: assemble may be found advertized in another column. The obvious neces* sity for improvement should indue©: on the part of the men a ready response to the efforts of their officers. A great want appears to be good drill instructors, without which no, appreciable improvement can be expected. "We believe the men will be exercised both in ball and blank firing. Communication is still open with? Taupo. Orderlies are passing between that district and Napier almost daily. The road is also in course of repair where necessary.. We learn that Capt. St. George been out with a force of about 100 natives. He captured a noted Hauhau spy (Ihaia te Mokomoko) and eight or ten other rebels, but did; not meet with Colonel Whitmore. He writes from Taupo that he is ready to take the field at a day's notice, being waiting for reinforce--ments. He learned from one of the* spies that 30 or 40 men are still at Ahikereru. The friendlies expect Te Kooti to turn up somewhere in the Taupo district. A meeting of the King natives is now being held north of Taupo. The decision come to regarding Te Kooti is that if he> holds out against us for one month they will join him. It is. pretty evident that they would rather do. so than not, but are desirous of test* ing his chances first, and they think one month will serve for this^
