Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. THURSDAY, APRIL 23, 1869. THE POLICY OF THE GOVERNMENT

As the progress of time developea the policy of the Government, as pursued by Colonel Whitmore in his effort.* to suppress the rebellion, its comprehensiveness and adaptability to the purpose becomes more clear, and opposition becomes proportion-' ately disarmed. So tar as we understand that policy at present, it appears to be, first, by vigorous measures to subdue the predatory bands under Te Kooti and others on this East Coast; second, to plant a strong force at Oruanui, with a view to the permanent occupation of the centre of the Island ; and, thirdly, to come to conclusions with the kins:, It is a source of regret that the local forces have not been able to come across the rebels since the perpetration of the Mohaka tragedy ; but no one can say what further mischief has been prevented by the ready response they made to the call of the local authorities, especially as it was doubtless well known, to the rebels that they were in force in Petane, and that our scouts were on the watch, and ready to meet them. We know that the conduct of the local forces was very gratifying to the Government. The opportune arrival of Colonel Whitmore with his forces on this Coast has dispensed with the necessity

0 f such extreme measures ior the protection of our out-districts as have been adopted. Accoidingly arrangements have been made for the relief of the camp at Petane, but owing to some misapprehension arising as to the time when this relief should come, or some other cause, a number of men rather prematiu ely marched to town yesterday. They were met on the Spi* anc * spo^e ll with by the lieut.-Colonel, after which they recrossed the harbor. Subsequently, howevei, they were marched to the Militia office, and dismissed.
