Apologetic.—We have to apologise for our rather late appearance to-day, as also a curtailment of our usual amount of matter—the call of the local forces from the town having taken away the principal members our staff, and leaving us to bring out the paper with the aid of one or two boys. Wellington.— Our telegraphic correspondent says:—"The ball last night to his Royal Highness went off with tclat. The Prince led the Hon. Mrs Stafford through the first dance." Scouting Party.—Major Green Yesterday detached a party consisting ot Lieut. Koch, Sergeant Garner, and 20 volunteers, with 2 days' provisions,- to guard the road by Putere to Pet&ae from the Mohaka.

Militia and Volunteers. —On Tuesday afternoon, immediately after the report of the retreat of the Hauhaus from Mohaka, a district order was issued to Captain W. R. Russell's (Meanee) Company, to march for Puketapu from the camp at Petane; and to Captain Wallace's (Puketapu) Company to march for Wharerangi. Yesterday morning the men of both these Companies were directed to be sent to their homes, but were requested to hold themselves in readiness for active service at any moment. The force at the Petane camp, composed of Nos. 1 and 2 Companies Militia, and Napier Rifle Volunteers, was also ordered to be reduced to 80 rank and tile, and some 29 of the married men were thus allowed to return to Napier. To-day it is likely that all the married men will be released, as the absentees from the town companies, of whom there are a considerable number, are ordered to parade at 10 a.m. in marching order, and will be marched to Petane to relieve an equal number of those who have been at the camp since Sunday. The absentees of Captain Rhodes' company will be required to do duty in a similar way.
