Firing on the Beach. —ln the Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, Stephen Hooper was charged by Inspector Scully with firing at the target on the beach near the Immigration Barracks, on the evening of the 19th ult. Mr Scully stated that on the evening in question about dusk, he had seen Mr Hooper firing at the target from a long range, and had advised him to desist, as the practice was dangerous 3 and that he had desisted accordingly. He found afterwards that a horse had taken fright through the firing, and that some persons in a buggy had a narrow escape of being thrown over a precipice on to the beach. He had brought this case before the Court simply that the firing might be placed under proper regulations. Mr Hooper said that ihe Superintendent had given permission to the public to use the range. The Resident Magistrate said that the Superintendent had no power to give such permission. He was glad this matter had been brought before his notice, as this indiscriminate firing was a source of danger. The police would receive instructions in future not to allow any private firing at the target unless they were satisfied that due precaution had been taken.—-Costs remitted.
