Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. THURSDAY, MARCH 18, 1869. THE NEWS FROM THE EAST COAST.
We transfer from the Auckland press to our columns this morning as full details as we are able to find space for of the attack, upon Whakatane, so long threatened by Te Kooti. Another instance is afforded of the sort of confidence we can place in such men as Rakuraku, At the very first a large portion of his men appear to have gone openly over to Te Kooti, and the subsequent capture of himself and the remaining portion is said to have been a simple arrangement preconcerted with the rebels ; even the murder of Mr Pitcairn is to be attributed to the treachery of his Maori wife. It does not seem that after all Te Kooti has anything to boast of in the matter of success —although he has destroyed Whakutane and committed other atrocities —if his loss be anything like that which is reported Tt is gratifying to know that the matter had been vigorously taken in hand by Major Mair (Resident Magistrate), and Dr. Pollen (representative of the General Government) ; and we may hope that the next news from that quarter will be of the annihilation of Te Kooti and his horde of savages.
