THE NGATIMANIAPOTOS.
Affairs in the vicinity of Opotiki on the East Coast seem to be gradually assuming a serious aspect. We hear that on Tuesday last a member ot the Defence Force arrived in town bearing the news that a party of the Ngatimaniapoto tribe were on their way to join Te Kooti and his band, who are, as we have already reported from the Auckland papers, threatening the settlements on the East Coast. We have also learnt that a large meeting of the King natives is at the present time being held near Taupo, the oscensible object of discussion being the advisability or otherwise of a general rising against the settlers; and that so far as can be ascertained the prevailing feeling feeling of the assembled natives is in an adverse direction.
In giving publicity to these reports we have no wish to raise any feeling of alarm, but feel it due to the out-settlers that they should be prepared for any contingency that may arise. The policy of the rebels, as again and again exemplified, is to fall without warning on the unsuspecting and unprepared, and perpetrate the most horrible atrocities, as has been already done in more than one instance. That further massacres will be committed by them there is too much reason to fear; and as it is impossible to say when or where, it is quite necessary that more than ordinary caution should be exercised by all those who are in any way liable to the danger.
