The Taniwha. —We learn from a letter in the columns of a contemporary that Mr Swainson is engaged fishing for the taniwha in Otaki Lake. He uses shark hooks, baited with sheep, and if these are sufficiently large to tempt the monster's appetite, we may shortly expect to see an account of this strange animal, reptile, or Pi.-h—whichever it maybe —forming a new page in the chapter of our natural history. —Evening Post, Feb. 25.
Tjie Eev. Thomas Adkin3, a celebrated dissenting minister, died on December 10, at Southampton, upwards of 80 years of a<*e. He preached nearly 60 yeara in the Above-bar Independent Chapel in the above-named town, and succeeded there the Kev. George Clayton, who afterwards became a famous London dissenting Minister. —Home News, 2nd January.
There has been a week's netting in the Severn with a view to obtaining ova suitable for transmission to New Zealand. These operations were completed on Monday, December 21, when the eggs, about l/,OOOinnumber,andinfirst-ratecondition were packed for the short journey to London, where they were repacked in ica, for the voyage to New Sealand. Mr J. R. Davy was present on behalf of the board, and Mr Frederic Allies, pisciculturist, of Worcester, by request of Mr Uamsbottom, also attended, both of whom bear witness that Mr Eamsbottom performed the operations in a most sciontifie manner, and that the fish went off all right upon being restored to liberty. A telegram came from Mr Youl to say that all operations must cease, as the Mindora, which was lying in 'the East India Docks, would sail on Wednesday, December 23 for New Zealand. — I Some News, 2nd January,
