THE PROVINCIAL SUB-TREASURERSHIP.
To. the Editor of the Eawke's Bay Times. Sir, —I just dropped into the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, and during the hearing of a case —Koch v. the Superintendent— was much surprised to learn tnat we-bad been saddled with an additional Government official, viz., a Provincial Sub-Treasurer; and this at a time of extreme depression, while everyone is talking of retrenchment. I suppose that, as in the case of the SubAuditor, work of some kind is found for this new public servant. He had, I believe, to draw a cheque for £5 to-day, and that in consequence he will be justfy entLled to draw his salary.—l am., Retrenchment. Napier, Feb. 23, 1869.
[With regard to the above, we may state that we do not know anything of the appointment of a Provincial Sub-Treasurer, and we trust that our correspondent is mistaken. It is well known that the Provincial Treasurer has for some time, through indisposition, been unable to perform the duties of his office ; and we suppose that the Acting Treasurer in the meantime is paid by him, as it would certainly be very wrong to throw the cost on the public. If it be a matter of private arrangement, there is no cause of complaint, so that the duties of Treasurer are efficiently performed.—Ed. H.8.T.l
