According to the local journal, 1000 sheep have been sold in the Wairaram Valley at 2s 6d per head. Death bx Drowning A melancholy accident has occurred at Port Mecquarriej N>w South Wales. The Rev. Mr Quin« la\*en, Roman Catholic priest, stationed here, was bathing, and whether from cramp having seized him, or from some other cause, as yet unknown, the reverend gentleman sank and was drowned. Captain Carbis of the Cutter Agnes Drowned.—The Daily Southern Cross, of the 10th February, says:—The ketch Kagle, Captain Loyerock, arrived in harbor yesterday morning from Poverty Ray. Captain Loverock reports that, before leav* ing for Auckland, he was informed that the master of the cutter Agnes, William Carbis, was drowned whilst going on board his vessel, which was lying at Read's. Wharf, Turanganui. It "seems that the Agnes was lying about twelve feet frpin the wharf, from which a plank or gangway was extended and that in attempting to get on board the deceased, by some noeans slipped off the plank and fell into the water, fhe splash was heard by two men belonging to the cutter, who were following do* leased to go, on board, and were but a short distance behind the captain. They at 1 onca hastened to his rescue, but when they had got to the wharf he had disappeared, and up to the time of the Eagle leaving the bodl had not been found,
