Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1869. THE EDUCATION TAX.

A correspondent in another portion of tbia clay's Times requests us to give our views on the subject of the Education Tax, "We have had the same request frequently made before, and have only only refrained irom an unwillingness to place any obstacle in the way of the Government scheme after it had passed the ordeal of the Provincial Council, and we could not well advert to the subject without doing so. We did not beiie%e, either, that the Government Avould attempt to enforce the tax, or that a collector would be found to undertake the work of col lecting it in the face of so much public disapprobation as has been expressed ; and we think it would have been much the wisest plan on the part of the Government to have let the matter quietly drop, and have tried the voluntary principle fur this one year. It is understood that this tax is but a temporary expedient, and that during the next session of the Provincial Council the Government will be prepared with a large measure calculated to meet the circumstances of the Province, and give satisfaction to all parties. On the general questions of education and direct taxation, our sentiments are well enough known, and we do not see that a reiteration of them now would be productive of good.

Man Missing at Wairoa.—We learn by the Muriwai that a man named John Gemmell, better known as " Scotch Jock," has been missing for some time, and it is feared he has been murdered by ITauhatis. His wife who is a native, had taken a letter to the Hauhaus, and on the day of Captain Spiller's expedition he followed her and has not been seen or heard of since.
