Messrs Wm. Hunter & Co.'s Live Stock Report for the week ending 15th January :
The supply of horses at the Durham Yards, on Saturday, was unusually large, good draught horses being the only description of which there was a limited number. Many animals changed hands, but prices scarcely equalled the expectation of sellers, although prices ruled quite as high as last week.
At Newmarket, on Monday, a large number of eattle were penned; buyers both for fat and store catttle mustered strong, and the bidding throughout was characterised by great spirit. Dairy cows wore a shade easier. Young stock were in much request, maintaining an advance on late rates. A large market of tat stock met with an adequate demand; the supply of sheep was good, but buyers were indisposed to purchase, except at a reduced rate to which sellers would not submit; consequently, the number that ohanged hands was limited. The following is a list of prices:—Dairy cows, from £9 to £l2 2s 6d; weaned calves from £2 to £3 14s ; yearlings, from £-1 6s to £5 ; two-year-old steers, from £0 5s to £6 10s; three-year-jold steers, from £7 10s to £9; beef, from 35s to 40s S(p 1001 b; sheep, half-breds, from 10s to 19s; lambs, from 9s to 10s each.
At Otahuhu, on Tuesday, there were only a few cattle, which, sold fully aw high rates as at Newmarket.
Mr Alfred Buckland's Live Stock Report for the week ending loth January ;
At the Haymarket, on Saturday, there was an improved demand for horse stock, particularly medium draft in good condition. All offered were sold at prices varying from £lB to £27 10s each 4 heavy draught from £3O to £37 10s. At Remuera, on Thursday, there were a large number of calves and yearlings penned. There is an increasing demand for this description of stock, and all offered were sold at (relative to the prices ruling for other cattle) extremely high prices. Six and ftight-montbs'-old calves brought from 60s to 75s t?d; yearlings, £4 5s to £5 15s For two-year-old cattle and store cows prices were low. Fat cattle offered in usual numbers; about 70 head penned, and, with a few exceptions, all sold, Prices ruled low—from 34s to 35s the 1001 b. The lambs advertised wore a very even flock, and in excellent condition; they brought from lis to 12s each. Fat sheep were abundant, and low in price. Long-wooled two-tooth wethers brought from 16s to ;J:i8; ewes, 16s to 18s; merino wethers, well fatted, 14s; half-bred ewes, 12 and 14s each. Fat lambs offered in excess of requirements, and prices were lower than hitherto fully 2s per head. A large number of fat calves were brought forward, which brought from 24s to 42sj young ctuves from 12s 6d to 20s cadi.
Messes. Caret. & Gilles's Live Stock Report for the week ending 15th January :
Fat Cattle:—We have no improvement to note since our last report. Prices obtained for cattle sold averaged 38s to 40s per lOOlbs. We look forward to a rise in the market in a few weeks. Store Cattle:—We sold a number of provincial bred steers, young and good quality; also, tliirtyflve head of large-framed bullocks at satisfactory rates. Young stock met with a ready sale aud the requirements are not being fully supplied. We quote—yearlings at £3 10s to £4 17s Hd; heifers, eighteen months old. £5 5s to £6l2s 6d per head, bullocks, £7 15s to £9 15s. Dairy cows sold readily at good rates. Fat Sheep;—24o fat sheep were penned—ex Star of the South, from Napier—which realised from 133 fid to 20s per head. The market continues well supplied, prices being about the same as obtained at last sales.
Store sheep:—Our sales have been 300 head, which were quitted at 10s to 103 6d, an improvement on last quotations. Figs were sold at 34s to 42s each.
