The Late Fire at Wanganui.— An inquiry into the origin of the disastrous fire which took place at Wanganui on Christmas Day, was held on Tuesday, Dec. 29. Several witnesses were examined, amongst whom was Mr P. A. Chavannes, of the Rutland Hotel, whose evidence is thus reported in the Evening Herald : I know John Dare, who kept the bowlingsaloon ; on Wednesday last he was in my bar creating a disturbance 5 he threatened me, saying, "You d b ,in less than three months* I will ruin you;" I told him if he was not quiet I should have him removed by the police j I informed the Sergeant of Police of the threat he had used towards me ; a man named M'Donald was present when Dare threatened to ruin me; he did not say he would burn my premises; I have given Dare no cause to threaten me thus ; he was in my employ a short time; he said he would not stay any longer ; I took him at his word and paid him off; I know of no other reason. The coroner adjourned the inquiry to half-past two p.m. on Monday,. 4th January, 1869, to enable the police to make further en« quiries.
