WELLINGTON.

We take tLe following paragraphs from the New Zealand Advertiser of the 21st and 2-lth July:— In the Legislative Council to-day (July 21), the Hon. Colonel Russell moved that a respectful address be presented to his Excellency the Governor, stating that, in the opinion of this Council, the present confused ami unsatisfactory state of native affairs requires the undivided attention of a Native Minister, having no other departmental duties. In both Houses of the Legislature the day before yesterday petitions were presented from 117 electors of Picton, ipraying for separation from Marlbonmgh, and erection into a County. A similar request from GO settlers in Whangaroa North was also presented in the Lower House. Mr Travers has given notice of his intention to move what is virtually a vote of want of confidence in the native policy of the Government, and censure on their past management of native affairs. In the House of Representatives, on Wednesday, Mr Travers moved — “ That, in the opinion of this House, it is desirable that immediate steps should be taken by the Government for ascertaining under what circumstances the natives detained at the Chatham Islands left those islands.” Agreed to. A petition is in course of signature, praying his Excellency the Governor, to constitute the City of Wellington a Borough, under an Act of the General Assembly, entitled “ an Act to provide for the establishment of Municipal Corporations.” The memorial is already signed by the principal merchants and traders in the city.
