THE HOSTILITIES AT FIJI.
The Daily Southern Cross, June 17, says ; —liy Ciie .Magellan Cloud, which left Fiji on the lilst Mu y, news has arrived that I'bukamban has been defeated by the rebels. Wui i respect to the native war, therefore, some error has apparently occurred, tin intelligence received by the schooner Jeanniu Duncan, via Lyttelton, being to the cil'ect that King Tiiakambau had been victorious over the mountain natives ; but Mr Thurston, the acting Fngiish coa.-ul, who was direct from the spot, was on board the Magi llan Cloud as she was getting under weigh, and stated that Thakarabau bad been beaten back, tho rebels having gained the advantage. The intelligence brought by Captain Shepherd, of the Jeannio Duncan was, that King riiakainbau is lighting with the native mountahteers who killed Mr Taker. On the day lie left there was a great battle between the tribes ; tho king lost, ISO men, and was victorious ; the loss of the others must have been great, the Christian natives being armed with muskets.
