After smoking for some litre, be ion .id there was more smoke than Ciinfl from the pipe, and, on looking mund, discovered the chaff on fire. He i-nmedia'-dy sorting to extinguish tho fire, hut while in the act of doing so both ic>>s exploded. As a matter of course, the leading was scattered to the four winds of heaven, the carrier himself escaping with hands and free considerably scorched. He was removed to the Lawrence Hospital, where he now lies. There is no immediate fear as to hi? recovery. It is a marvel that he was rot blown to atoms. Accident to a Mixer.—A very sad accident occurred to a young man named Henry Millar, who has been working as a miner at Swede’s Terrace, near Piper’s Fiat, Wnitnca, on the 30tb ult. It appears that lie was engaged in the face of the claim, when an immense fall of earth took place, burying the injured re an. When ext ricated by his mates it was found that his thigh | was broken, and that he had received very [severe i,•juries in the abdomen. He was to-day carried to 'own on a stretcher by his I mates, and conveyed to the hospital. We i learn that the young man is most respectably connected in Victoria, being the son of Mr Mars Millar, of Melbourne, and nephew to Mr Henry Millar of the same piaoe.—-Hokitika Evening Star.
