FIGHTING AT WHAKATANE.
TWO ITAU-lIAUS KILLED.—FOUR OF THE QUEEN’S NATIVES CAPTURED.
(From the New Zealand Herald, Ith March.) By the arrival of the schooner Jane from Tauranga, we ha~e intelligence of an engagement having taken place between the Queen’s natives and the ITau-haus, at Whakatane. The news was received in Tauranga early on the morning of the 30th ultimo, and the Jane sailed the same day for Auckland.
The report is that a large body of ITau-haus were fired upon by some of the Ngatiana tribe (Queen’s natives.) and two of them were killed, and ntliers wounded. Subsequently the ITau-haus succeeded in capturing four of the Ngatiauas, and it is supposed they have '.men killed. The Volunteers stationed at Wliakatnne have gone out in search of the ITau-haus, but it is very doubtful whether they will succeed in overtaking them.
