Serious .Accident throcgii Drink.— Another of those frequent ly*r.’caning accidents from the fun.ms riding of drunken Alaories occurred on Av cdnesday evening, on tho W liite-road, by which a raluabl. horse was killed, ami ihe hr. 3 of two p. sons at least placed hi great p’.iparjr. I’ appears that Mr Thomas, of 11 Aids Customs, was riding towards town, ami was met by a gang ot Mono*, he a i- d t.-y Tareha, the neuly-eiicied memo, r of the House of Representatives, furi usiv riding. It was at once evident that 1, e from collision with them was imo- . i d.> ■ TutvLa and Mr Thomas came hdo violent contact, and were b-.nn thrown f;o:n their horses with considerable force. 1;-,. horse of the latter gentleman was kill d, and he himself rendered insensible for fan or five hours. Tareha did not csaajn without suffering some disfigurement from wounds. AVe ara happy to learn that Air Thomas is progressing favorably; but wc ere convinced that the constantly permittee drunkenness cf the Maori people will some day lead to fatal results—after which, perhaps, existing laws, as against drink-selling may be more stringently eufoiced. ISurpES and I*sl msj.NTATiox.— The Dun doe “ People’s Journal ” contains the fol lowing paragraph :—“Air John Palmer, clothier, being about to leave Kirriemuir Forfarshire, boot land, for Kow Zealand, 1 number ot his friends invite. 1 him to sup per 011 Monday evening (doth January) when about thirty sat down. Af-w omrer Mr Ji, ini Munio, teacher, in the name o the subscribers, presented Mr Palmer will a handsome pocket Bible, beating a suit able inscription. The rest of the evening was spett in a strictly teetotal and truly happy in 01 r.er.” [We believe that it is Air Palmer’: intention to take up h.s abode ni the 110 vjuce of Hawke’s Bay, where, ws trust, : £ood cponiiijj awaits him ]
