VICTORIA.
DESTRUCTIVE TIRE iN PeeL-sTBEET,
MELBOURNE. On the evening of the 6th March an extensive fire broke out on the premises of Mr G. M. Stone, draper, 23 Peelstreet, East Collingwood. The house, which was constructed of wood, was totally destroyed, and the flames spread to the adjoining shop, occupied by Mr Andrews, confectioner. In a few minutes this building was entirely consumed. From thence the flames communicated to T, W. Smith’s bootmaker’s shop, next door and having destroyed it, extended to the premises at the corner of Peel and Cambridgestreets, occupied by Mr W. Barnard, as a bakery and grocery store. Two small wooden dwelling-houses owned by Mr W. Barnard next succumbed, as well as two small brick houses adjoining, owned by Mrs Juniper. Mr Stone’s house and stock is supposed to be covered by insurance to the extent, of about £I6OO, Mr Andrews and Mr Smith are uninsured ; Mr Barnard is insured for £B6O. The property owned by Mrs Juniper, is covered by insurance to the extent of £167.
