Arrivals. —The Rer. J. Mncnik-hac],! Presbyterian Minister, returned to (ho Provir.ce by the s.s. Ahuriri on Thursday last. Mr T. S. Kemp, the well-k nowu low | comedian, also returned to Napier bv the same opportunity. Conviction of Whelan.— The Melbourne Herald of the 25th ult. says :—The second trial of Joseph Whelan, for tin murder of Thomas Ihamley, the hawker, in August last, was concluded yesterday, and resulted in a verdict of guilty against the prisoner. Mr Smyth moved for an arrest of judgment on law points similar to those which had been previously raised during the trial ; but his Honor Mr dustice flurry declined to entertain the application. Before he was sentenced the prisoner complained that, with the exception l of one or two gentleman, the same jury had tried him as were empanelled at the pre vious trial ; his Honor, however, assured I no prisoner that he was mistaken, and the list ol the names of the last jury’ was read |over lo show that such was the case. In jpassing sentence of death, his Honor ex i pressed his concurrence with the finding ot the jury.
