THURSDAY, MARCH 19, 1868. WESTLAND PATRIOTISM.
Nullim addidus jurare in verba magistri,
The councillors of the County of Westland have just given us an instance of the way in which extravagance may be indulged in by “ County Councils ” under the General Govern ment, as • contra-distiuguished from Provincial Councils. At a recent meeting of that body, when seven members were present, a motion was passed, awarding to each of themselves a sum of £75 for the half year as payment for their services— a sum equivalent to £3 per week throughout the year. One of the members only (Mr Bonar) opposed and voted against the motion. One member (Mr Harrison) was absent from that sitting. At a subsequent meeting of the Council thatgemlemau, supported by Mr Bonar. moved the house into committee with the view of amending the objectionable vote. After some opposition on the part of Messrs Keary and Whall, the originators of the scheme, the commit tee was granted, the previous resolution rescinded, and a sum of £1 Is per j day in addition to the cost of travelling! to and from Hokitika for country j members only, substituted. The ati’air! has been made the subject of a quasi! heroic poem by a Nelsonian, whosei effusion is published in the Colonist. I The same will appear in our next. i
