Defence Mimstee,— The Hon. Colonel Haultain was a passenger by the s.s. Tara naki, for Wellington, on Wednesday last. The Pbotecxios of the Meanee £i veb. —A public meeting was called for Tuesday last at the Meanee Hotel, for the purpose of providing means for preventing the overflow of the Meanee River at its weak point near Mr Aliey ! s property; but as th’ attendance was almost nil, nothing was done. From the apatliy of those interested we conclude it is not likely that any further steps will be taken in the matter until thej occurrence of another flood shall once morel bring it in a forcible manner before the attention of the public.
