The following items of Australian news appear in the Evening Post, of Tuesday last, supplied by their Duuedia correspondent: —
The Gothenburg’s dates are from Melbourne to the 2Tth Feb. The news not important. The general election for members of the Victorian Parliament has concluded, the reHliii. bcii>- 3 treat RioritT fO’* \Vmiofrir, 21 opposition candidates and 57 ministerialists returned.
Sir Dominick Daly is dead, and a great gloom prevails over South Australia in consequence. The late Governor’s funeral attracted an immense crowd, who paid every respect on the solemn occasion. Sir Dominick was much liked by all classes.
On the 22nd ult. the river Hunter rose 10 feet in 5 hours, overflowing its banks. The settlers on low-lying grounds were compelled to abandon their homes and seek refuge at Windsor. A vast quantity of property has been destroyed. Two dams at the waterworks gave way.
The barque Cht-’iydra was wrecked at Port Stevenson, and one life lost.
