FIRS IN CHRISTCHURCH, CANTERBURY.
ONE MAN BURNT TO DEATH. INQUEST AND VERDICT OF WILFUL MURDER. Br our files received last night, wo learn that a destructive fire took place in Co-lombo-strect, Christchurch, on the night of the 7th iost. Several houses were burnt down, and an unfortunate man named John Rankin, who had bc-c-u sleeping in one of the houses destroyed, was burnt to! death. An inquiry was held on the 10th jnst., when the following verdict was returned;—“That the prisoner John Dasely Swale, on the ,'night of the 7ih February last, did unlawfully, feloniously, and maliciously set fire to a certain house in which one John Rankin was at the time residing, and the jurors say on theirioath that the said John Dasely Swale did thereby wilfql'y murder and kill the said John Rankin.” The prisoner vvas then removed in '
