Meleoukne, 29th January. The Governor agreed to recommend the Horae authorities (in reply to a deputation) to direct men-of-war to visit the Auckland islands. A considerable business is done in flour —600 tons for another colony sold at £ls to £ls 12s. 6d. ; there is a good local business. Maize has declined to 3s. 4|d. accepted The Amelia’s cargo of coffee was sold privately. j Adelaide, 28th January. The postal question is again engaging public atteneion, and a deputation yesterday waited on the Government from the chamber of Commerce on the matter, j The Hon. Yv r . Milne declines again to enter Parliament, i Herr Kunge. a well known musical ! professor, died here yesterday.
The gross exports for ilie past year were valued at £2,750,000, of which £1,250,000 represented breadstuffs.
The returns for the yea? show that the Government land sales have been gradually decreasing in amount; also that the total number of acres tiansferred uuuer Torrens* act was 2,500,000 and that the quantity of land already brought under that Act is double that still remaining under the old land system. The population of the colony now numbers 173,600. The birth rate has beeu decreasing gradually during the last five years. The general revenue for the last year fell short of the Treasurer’s estimate by £200,000. The chief deficiency is in that derived from the land sales.
The Government, out of consideration of the loss sustained by the farmers through the failure of their crops, are opening depits for firewood at all the railway stations, paying the farmers cash on delivery. Ihe vacancies occasioned by the resignation of Messrs 0. K. Richardson and O’Halloran have been filled up by the promotion of Mr Josiah Boothby from the office of chief clerk to Under Secretary, and the promotion of Mr E. W. Hitchiu from the post of Under Treasurer to Auditor General. Mr J. U. Haining, the Assistant Auditor General, becomes Under Treasurer vice Mr Hitchen Mr Bright, M. I’., has brought i:in action against “ Bunyip," for comments on his conduct. The corn market is very firm. Sales of old wheat have been made at 7s. 4d. to 7s. 6d. Flour is unsettled. j 29th January. I (Sovernment has confirmed the i appointment of Mr Mais as Engineer in chief, after one year’s probation. The Orient has brought a large addition to the natural history department of the Botanical Gardens. The corn market is quiet; buyers of old wheat offer 7s. 41., but sellers ask 7s. 6d. , Weather warm and fine.
