Eare Beoiore, the new Governor-in* chief of New South Wales, arrived in Sydney by (he ship Sobroan on (ho 7th uh. A Learned Cof>'Cixj.ob.— The Hokitika Evening Star states that one of the candidates «,t the Bailer for provincial honors in the Nelson Council is we are informed, unable to sign his name but his “cross” is said to be really a very fine specimen of penmanship. The candidate comes out very strong upon the education question. The New Goveekor. —Despatches from the Colonial office were received by the Kuahine, stating that Sir George Bowen’s commission as Governor of New Zealand had been forwarded to him, covered by a despatch dared the 20th Nov., Sir Georee Bowen will, therefore, be sworn in as Governor immediately on his arrival here, which, as ho was at last advices in Sydney, may possibly take place on the sth or 6th prox., should the Ruahiue arrive at Sydney in time to allow of his embarking on board the homeward steamer. The despaches were forwarded to Sir George Grey on Sunday morning by the Sturt which sailed for Manakau by way of the West Coast. The Hons. Colonel Haultain and J. C. Richmond were passengers by her. It certainly seems rather wanting in courtesy to his Excellency to forward despatches of so much importance by such a round-about way instead of sending the Sturt direct to Kawa. —Wellington independent, ISth January,
