Toutola. Island. —This island which our mail telegram reports to have been the scene of fearful loss of life, is one of throe belonging to the Virgin group which form part of the British West Indian Islands. It was originally settled by Butch buccaneers in 18IS, but was wrested from them m 1866, and annexed to the Leeward Islands. The harbor one of the finest iu the world, is fifteen miles long by three and a half wide, perfectly land locked, and has been occupied by 400 vessels at one time. The area of the is'and was 13,000 acres, and prior to the manumission of the slaves, did a considerable export trade iu sugar, cotton, and rum. •‘The City of the Plains.” —A correspondent of the S. M. Herald inquires whether the Duke of Edinburgh will visit “the City of the Plain?” It is in this wav he designates Bathurst. A similar phrase is well known in Scripture phraseology, and is applied as an alternative to Sodom and Gomorrah. For what reason such a designation should be chosen wo are at a loss to conjecture. At any rate the history of the cities of the plain is not such as to enconrge a visit of the Duke if he should happen to think the names is chosen as the Americans call their cities the Athens and Corinth.
