NEWCASTLE.

A Hoax.—ln our last we stated—on the authority of Capt Howie, of the brio- ‘ Maggie,’—that the proprietor of the Newcastle Chronicle’ had been charged with libel, and sent to prison; and (nat the ‘Chronicle’ had ceased to exist. It now appears that Capt Howie only related the above statement to our reporter as “ a joke,” and that he did not expect to see it in print. It is true ho (the Captain) now says, that the proprietor had been charged with libtd, but he was not sent to prison; and the paper had only been suspended for a short time. When Captain Howie again relates anything as a “joke ” to a newspaper reporter, lie should take care that the joke is apparent.
