THE ENGLISH MAILS.
The s.s. Egmont, now in command of our old acquaintance Capt. A. Kennedy, arrived in port at 3 pm. yesterday, with the English mails via Suez and Panama, —being one day before her due date. The news via Suez we reprint in another column, and will be found of a highly important character. That brought via Panama we are unable to find room for this morning. We may remark, however, that tbe accounts to hand by the latter route relative to the frightful destruction of property and loss of life caused on some of the West India islands by a succession of earthquakes, preceded by a hurricane, are truly heartrending, and fully confirm the telegrams via Suez published elsewhere. Latest accounts from America show large majorities for the Democrats, and a split in the ranks of the Republican party.
