The news from the ihamei Q-old-fiehls i seems highly encouraging. The latest in- ' telligeuce will be found elsewhere. A man named Frank Johnston, a seajman belonging to the cutter Cornstalk, was jdrowned otf the Kawau on the 16th inst. The fallowing regarding th* accident is from I the New Zealand Herald, of the 18th iust.r 1 —“ The vessel was healing up against a strong southerly breeze, and just as the 'she had wore round, after going in stays, i the unfortunate tnau received a blow from the staysail, wjhich immediately knocked him overboard. The vessel was again put | in stays, and with all possible haste the | boat was lowered. Unfortunately the boat wns swamped alongside in launching her, and before the cutter could approach the drowning man, he sank, and was seen no more. When Johnston fell overboard, he had on a heavy monkey jacket and lilga boots. He could mviiii but little, otherwise he would have reached the vessel, which was only about 20 or 30 yards from where he sank. Having used every excrtiou to save the poor fellow without success, the Cornstalk proceeded to Auckland, arriving in harbor \ t sterday morning.” The papers to hand contain very little general news of importance, Extracts in our next.
