The Prince Alfred stakes were | won by a gelding by Chevalier; the; Maiden Plate by Promise ; the Tally-1 ho Stakes by Cornet ; the Railway] Plate by Blonden; and the Ilelteri Skelter Stakes by Ada. j The Government intend trying to pass the estimates, and prorogue Parliament before Christmas. The Oriental Bank has notified its intention to terminate the Govern ment financial agency, and requires the immediate repayment of advances A large public meeting, held in the Masonic Hall, has condemned the new stamp duties. Galiya, Laurence, Thompson, Gordon, Hewitt, Sinclair, Gregory, Sheridan, Gilbert, E. Gregory, C. Gregory, Bilcher, and Blak have been selected as the intercolonial team for the forthcoming cricket match. The municipal elections have caused greater excitement than was ever known before.
Moore. Caraher,Pritchard, Murphy, Hurley, Batter, and Kippax have been elected aldermen.
In the Assembly, a motion to render the Government responsible for gold carried by escort was negatived.
The Governor returned from the southern districts on the afternoon of the 2nd.
ADELAIDE. It is reported that the shipments of wheat and flour to England last season have proved most remunerative to the speculators. Captain Franklin, of the St. Leonard’s, has patenteed turn inventions of compasses for the safer steering of iron vessels.
The free railway passes are not likely to he given to members, &c., after the next general election. They are now only available to Dec. 21. A fire took place at Dr Popham's, Gawler, on the night of the Ist in-t. The doctors stepson was unfortunately burnt to death, and also another boy named Thomson. Both Houses of Parliament met on the 4th. A motion was on the afternoon of the 4th moved in the Legislative Council, that the proprietors of the Register he summoned to the bar of the House, to answer to the question of a breach of privilege, for publishing an article in the South Australian Register of November 22. It appears that the breach of privilege consisted in commenting upon the report of and evidence taken before the com mission appointed to enquire into the condition of the police force, which resulted in the enforced resignation of Major Warburton, before such report had been made public. The motion was lost, the previous question being carried in the negative. After a thorough investigation by competent farmers, the advices speik more favorably o'f the wheat crops in the north and south-east.
It is proposed to erect a large obelisk on Mount Lofty, in commemoration of the Prince’s visit.
Mr Fuller, M.P., has been elected! Mayor of Adelaide by a majority of over 1200.
Cbafloner, a private of the 50th Regiment, has been committed for trial at the Supreme Court, for burning valuable haystacks.
