The 18th Royal Irish. —The New Zealand Times, October 28, says : —“ Two companies of the 18th Royal Irish, under the command of Capt. W ray and Capt. Noblett, will shortly proceed from Wanganui to Napier, and those under the command of Captain Young and Lieut. Hacker will be located at Taranaki, while the remainder of the regiment will be forwarded to Auckland.” The Wanganui Chronicle seems disposed to appreciate Her Majesty’s troops far more in the light of consumers than defenders, as the following extractevidently shows : —"ln a pecuniary point of view, the departure of the 18th will be a loss to our storekeepers, but one which they will speedily get over. The beer trade is the only one that will be materially affected, and suffer most. There is, however, no help for it. Auckland will rejoice in the head-quarters ; Taranaki needs the beer consumption and the generous protection of'two companies more than Wanganui does; and Napier will not be the worse, but all the better for its quota. This is looking at the soldiers in the light of consumers ; recent orders and events have caused the settlers to cease regarding them in the light of defenders, although neither officers nor men have any blame in that arrangement.”
