The Panama Company’s steamship ‘ Lord Ashley,’ Captain Worsp, is due here from Southern Provinces on Wed nesday next, 3Ulh October, with the English Mails via Sui z and Panama, attouui me Auckland poritou ot tho Panama Mail be on board, the ‘Lord Asbk-y’ will steam for the North on the same day that site arrives; otherwise, she will not leave till Thursday, 31st October.

The nut ward mail leaves Napier on Saturday next, 2nd November, by the New Zealand Company’s steamship ‘ Wellington,’ Captain Holmes, which vessel is due on Fi iday next from Tauranga and Auckland. Verily, our country settlers owe the Government of the day a debt of gratitude for the admirable arrangement just completed, by which only two short davs are allowed for answering correspondence!

Gazette. —A Provincial Government Gazette, issued on Wednesday. 23rd October, contains—(l) a proclamation by his Honor the Superintendent, notifying that the Appropriation Act, 1857, the Sheep and Scab Amendment Act, 1857, and the Cattle Trespass and Impounding Act, 1857. having received tiie Governor’s assent, are now in force within the Province of Hawke’s Bay ; (z) a notification to the effect that officers of the Provincial Government are required to attend at their respective offices from 9 a.ra. to 5 p.m. on all week days except Satur day, when the hours of attendance will he from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. ; (3) a notice to the effect that the *• usual holidays” will be observed this year in the public offices on the 4th ami sth November, it having been found inconvenient to observf them on tli< Ist and 2nd November; (4) a not levin the usual form in the matter of tin Debtors’ and Creditors’ Acts, 1852, 1855, and 1855, and in the matter i-f John Armstrong Turner,car proprietor, a debtor ; (5j a notice that the circuit sitting of the Supreme Court fur tin despatch of civil and criminal business will he holden at the Court-house, N i pier, on Fiiday, Bth November, at 10 a.m. ; (5) a notice that a minor sit ting of Jibe Supreme Court under the Debtors’ and Creditors’ Act, 1862 1865, 1855, will be held at the Courthouse, Napier, on Monday, 11th November, at 11 a.m.; (8) a notice that a Sitting in Banco of the Supreme Court will he held on Tuesday, 12th November, at 11 a.m. ; [9) a notice that Messrs. John Stuart and Edward Pulford will continue the business of Stuart and Co, on and after Ist November, under the same designation, but on their own account, as merchants, auctioneers, &c. Wairoa.—Fatal Boat Accident —By the Dolphin we have intelligence from Wairoa of a fatal bout accident which occurred in that river on tin 13th inst. by which a military settler named Goldsmith, lust his life. I would appear that the deceased ami another military settler mimed Murplu were proceeding up the river in a hoar, heavily laden with goods, and had got in safety to within a few- feet of the landing place, when from some carelessness orawkwardness in the manage ment of the beat, it ran foul of a suae and capsized. The deceased sank immediately, and never rose; Murohy. more fortunate, had presence of mind enough to give the boat a bard push with his feet, and tlm> propel him-adf to the bank. The accident lias thrown quite a gloom over the small comma mty. Every eff *rt bad been made to -ecover the body of Goldsmith, but without effect up to Thursdiy last.
