Hawke's Bay Times.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 1867. LATEST NEWS.

“ NuUitts addict us jurare in verba manistri.”

The arrival of the s.s. Lord Ashley yesterday placed us in possession of

our Auckland files to the 12th Inst.. aud also some southern papers via the West Coast; there is, however, a singular barrenness of news of importai ce, which is the more extraordinary as it is so long since we have any communication from another port. The criminal session of the Supreme Court had been held at Auckland, and among other cases disposed of, the two prisoners South, who had been committed on the charge of arson were acquitted. The charge against a printer named Donchaisse of obtaining money under false pretences also broke down, the document said to he falsified not being forthcoming. Several cases of larceny, uttering forged cheques, and one of burglary were disposed of. The news from the gold-fields continues of the same character as before ; very little gold finds its’ way to Auckland, hut prospectors are busy, and a good many people continue to go to the diggings. Rich specimens of quartz continue to be found, one piece, the weight oi which is not stated, being handcrushed, has yielded over Boz. of gold. Another rich reef has also been discovered at Coromandel.

At our latest dates from Wellington (6th September] the House of Representatives was still iu Committee ol Supply, and the debate had assumed a decidedly gloomy tone owing to the universal depression existing throughout the Colony. The necessity of economy seemed to be apparent to the house, and a proposition had beet, made to reduce the salary of the Governor to £2,500 per annum.
