WAIPIKURAU.
CELEBRATION OF THE OPENING OF A NEW BUILDING AS A CHURCH OR SCHOOLHOUSE. Tiik new erection recently made under the able superintendence of Mr Winlove for a school-house and church, was formally opened on the evening of Tuesday, 11th August, by a tea party and public meeting, The room presented a very tasteful appearance, having been decorated for the occasion by a young lady recently arrived ; and the refreshments were gratuitously provided by several of the I t dies I I of the neighbourhood. In the absence of; Mr H. Russell and Mr G-ollan, two of the | trustees, the chair was ably filled by Mr I J. Harding, who in a neat speech congra-; tulated those interested on the fact of their opening the building free of debt;! and paid a well-deserved tribute to Mr Russed for his energetic exertions in the cause. The Rev. Mr Shepherd, the pastor of the district, next addressed the meeting, and in a few interesting remarks showed {the necessity of energy, perseverance, and [toil, in 9rder to the acquirement of piccess
in life m the colonics, as elsewhere ; and the certain failure of those who expected it without these mdispensible conditions. The Rev. J, M'Michael, of the Meanee district, next made an interesting speech, which we regret we are unable to report. His fundamental principle was the motto jof Sir W. Hamilton, —“On earth there is nothing great but man: in man there is nothing great but mind aim did full justice to the truths contained in it. Other speeches were maao during the evening by persons present ; and music and singing enlivened the proceedings. The weather was, and had been most unfavorable, but still there was a goodly number present, and the meeting an unqualified success.
