Telkoi; Arn Icxtkxsiox.—The following is from the Daily Southern Cross, 13 1 1 1 July; —“ \\ o understand that the sunny has been made for extending the telegraph from Opotilii to Taur.anga, in connect ion with the* line from Wellington to i Napier and Oontiki. The telegraph works between Wellington ami Napier are being • vigorously pushed on. The Northern i'felegiaph Di.-triot, under (he charge of ! Mr Wearer, C. if., the Jhiginecr-in-Chid, .begins at Opotiki. As soon is; may be j deemed expedient, the line of telegraph |will be eor.t lusted from Tnnrargi to Cam i 1 bridge, thus linking Atteklaud in the' telegraphic chain of the colony.” j I The Native Qrcsxiox. —The WcllingTon Independent has the following per-' tinent remark.-; —" We don’t want luipei ial itroops at all, because, should mother war. break out, they arc not adapted for ti e particular kind of lighting required in flic bush when dealing with Maoris. As a garrison force lor (lie towns, the trooj s would be more ornamental than useful, j W hat, the colony requires is a small well(disciplined force of picked men, trained to imove quickly, ami accustomed to Maori tactics. Such men can readily be found, because we have had them already under \on Tempsky, M‘i)onncll, Diggs, and Hussey ; and should the occasion arise, wo could get some of them again. At all events the colonists do not want Imperial troops, and they will not pay for them. As
to spending od.OO■> a year on (he native#, '•ve "'ill i.tt spend a single shilling that wc c.m possibly help. It bir buvv choose# to locate a regiment a! iaupo, he can do so, but the colony is not bound to spend money on the native#, because he does what (hey cannot prevent. As a mat ter of opinion, we think it highly probable (hat the presence of a regiment in the heart of Maoridom would would exasperate the natives, and cad in a renewal of hostilities."
The General Assembly.—Tho Wellington correspondent of the New Zealand Herald, under onto Slit July, mites as follows : —The parliamentary speculations are, usual witli such r.r.ti-dr.led wishes, plentiful, but unprofitable. INobudy needs to be told that the Government are determined to k' ep their own counsel. 1 have heard of some altvir.pt to gather the mind of tho Auckland members upon the courst of probabilities, but these gentlemen are disposed to keep their own counsel as arc those who question them. 1 am informed (hat a meeting ol the Auckland members will be held to-day. It is probable that |the Auckland members will be greatly inillucnced in their political action by thc j t urn that a Hair# may take ns affecting the I relation# existing between parties in the i Assembly. They will be prepared for j events, and can estimate contingent • chance?, by bring free to act wpo.i an |cm erg. noy, although firmly band'd uw j get her in defence ol the interests of (heir ‘constituents. 1 shall inform you in due course of the progress of parliamentary tactic?, so far as I may be able to gather up the strings that raise up the political curtain.
OroiiKl. —The cutter I>essy arrived yesterday from Opotiki, having hit tliat place on Xhur.-day last, but bring;, no further news. Scouring parties in charge of Major St. John had been out almost uaiij, but nothing further bad transpired respecting the whereabouts of the rebel natives.— Daily Southern Cross, loth July.
REPORTED GATHERING OF REBEL NATIVES at Rotop.ua. —The Daily Southern Cross, July 15, says : —“ By tho arrival on Saturday evening of tho steamer Tauranga from Tauranga, the very startling news was brought that a large body of Waikato rebels hud gat bored in tho Ret irua district.
and had stopped communication ou the road between Rotorua and Maketu. It was said that the rebels numbered some hundreds, and that they were determined ou sparing no persons who fell in their way. They had, it is said, received Mmir commission to fight direct from the King On inquiry as :c 1 _ fl "bore news reached Tauranga, wo learn that it v-ra; brought
there on the day the steamer sailed, from Maketu, by Retreat Tapsell, who had got it from the Rotorua rua linen. So fur as wo can learn, no official communication has been received from Mr Clarke, at T;.uranga, or Mr Mackey, who is at present at Maketu. Wo may say at once that wo quite disbelieve that part of tho story about the shutting up of the Waikato an-> Rotorua road. The track through the buJi from Ratalere, over which the rebels would have travelled, enters the Rotorua district behind the old pa of Puraku, and from that place to the nearest point of the Maketu road is twelve or liftceu miles, missing close to the loyal settlement cl Kaikaitahuna and (lie pa of tho Ngatipikiao at tho Rotoi i. As to the fact of the gathering, wo have little doubt that et til)
events tho numbers are greatly exaggerated. "We have no news from Waikato tending to confirm the statement; indeed, what we have heard is rather of an opposite character. Pei heps the report iriginates hum flic Ngatitengakaus aue Xritiraiigiwewehis having come back to Rotorua from P .Latere, with not (lie most distant idea of lighting. At all events, the friendly Arawas in that district are quite able to take care of themselves. We have no doubt that in a very few days wo sb.dl learn tho real facts of tho mutter from Maketu.”
Melbourne Post Office. —Tho new General Post-office in .Melbourne, which has been so many years in course of building, lias at leugtn been brought nearly to completion, and was to have been opened on tlie 2nd instant.
