Mrcn Wanted ix Xaeifk —From our English files we observe that a National Working Men’s League for stopping the Sale of Intoxicating Liquors on she Sabbath Day has been established at Manchester. It is proposed to have an auxiliary in every city and town in the United Kingd< m. A league of this kind is much wanted in New Zealand, in some of the towns of which colony the practice of selling drink on the Sabbath day is carritd on to a fearfil extent —our own little town of Napier being no exception to the rule.
The Wreck of the McNiiioßENcr. During the past few days operations hare been resumed in recovering the remainder of the cargo of the Montmorency, a diver and the necessary apparatus having been procured by the purchasers for that purpose. We understand that a trial was made on Thursday at low water, but the surf broke too heavily on the diver to permit of his accomplishing much. On Friday and Saturday something was done at high tide, but the sea was very rough. It is to b© hoped wo shall have a spell of fine calm weather, during which the enterprising pureiiasers of the wreck may proceed with their work.
Oxru Water Scpply. —Napier is now in a fair way to obtain a better supply of wafer than heretofore. What may be regarded as the experimental borings of the district at Meaneeand Clive having proved successful, a commencement has been made in the town under the auspices of the Provincial Government, and certain enterprising townsmen. The boring was commenced on Friday last, and continued during a portion of Saturday Gre-it interest is manifested in the operations by the public, who might have bean seen grouped around the spot. We trust that this attempt will prove equally successful with the others, and that the character hitherto borne by our town of being badly olf for water will no longer be applicable. The depths at which water has been struck at Meauee were 151 and 147 feet, and at Clive 117 feet, with a good overflow. Tho Provincial Government provides one-half of the funds lor this important undertaking, Messrs Newton, Irvine, & Co. undertaking that the remainder shall be supplied by subscription.
