Fjbk.—A Src whioh, but for a eombina* tior. of fortunate clrcu«>«tan<?fta. might have been attended with serious consequence*, took place in the bakehouse of Hr Casey, Hastings-street, on Thursday morning last. The premises in question arc completely 'surrounded by an extensive block oi builddings, and at the time the alarm was first given (about half-past one a ra.) it was difficult to say where the lire bad originated. At that time the fire was raging furiously and little hope was eutertah ed of saving from total destruction the burning building itself, to say nothing of the adjoining premises. But as wrhaves '.id, there was a combination of fortunate circumstances which served to make the result otherwise. In the first place there was no wind ; there wa» plenty ot water close handy; and number* of willing and active men were sueediiy al work Allthese put together sufficed to stay the progress of the fiery element, and in lest than half amhour after the first alarm all signs o I a conflagration had vanished and our streets once more relaused into their usual state of quietness. The cause of tha accident may be attributed to a quantity of firewood having been put int .■ the oven during the day to dry; taken out while in a pi tial state of ignition, and placed against the wooden wall of the bakehouse, where it had smouldered until morning, ami then broke into llanie, caught the wall and ascended to the roof, when bursting through which twa s happily discovered, and, as w» have show a tpeeuih extinguished. Wear* glad to learn that the damage sustained by dir Casey is comparative ly email. Wo cannot close tins briif notice without impressing upon the public the urgent necessily of exercising the utmost caution in th« matter of fire.
