SYDNEY

the Sydney Morning ners’d, March IS, reports ; —Trade continues excessively dull owing to the non-an ival of the mail steamer and the receipt, of English advices, which have seldom been looked for with more anxit ty. Holders are nut anxious to sell, and buyers arc allowing their Brock* to be reduced to the smallest quantity that their trade and chiefly confined to provisions and i!v necessaries of life Breadstuff* have slightly improved as stocks are becoming 1-ghter, and most nr the purchases for forward del: very are getting tilin'led. Ti e cargo of Chili in floor ex Zillah has almost cleared the market of ail of this descript ion in first and brought its full value. Local miller* quote best flour at £ll to £l2. Adelm to silk-dressed is in fair trade demand at £1?! to £l3 10s for small parcels. Wheat, os to 5s Li. Liquors continue! dull. Marten’s brandy is offering at lower rates! without producing any business. Hulk beers 1 maintain high rates, but sales are confined to ac- j taal wants; a parcel of Trent Brewery at auction: brought £H 10a ; Bass’s triangle ale. 9s 3d ; Byass’s stout, Ss sd. Both the latter were new shipments ; Sugars have advanced considerably, and holders! appear indisposed to force sales at present Tbe ! only large sale of the week was the cargo of the 1 Silver Star, tor which an advance of about £2 per ; ton was obtained—crystals bringing as high as hidi as £43 ss, and yellow counters from £h> r>s! to £33 10s. The Sugar Company have advanced i their prices about £2 on all descriptions. Holders | of teas are still looking for higher rat es than the! trade will give, and at the sale of the Albert Jnrs’s cargo only a limited business was done, ilicim-| porters preferring to hold rather than accept the' prices offered. The supply of tallow continues far short of the requirements of the market, and at: the produce sales held this morning competition! was so bn-k that prices advanced £2 to £3 per 1 ton. This rise is attributed to au active demand in the southern colonies, and is likclv to continue,! as the wants of manufacturers is sure to increase with their winter trade. Hides continue active,; but most of the parcels offering are o; inferior and! medium quality, and possess no attraction for either shippers or local trade. The arrival of the Eastward Ho lias added largely to our stocks of tobacco. Mo*t of the shipments by her are said to be superior, but are not yet in the market. The lumbei market is glutted by recent arrivals.
