TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMES.
Sir, — A week more and ice will be in the midst of the noise and excitement of electioneering. Certainly if there is one thing more than another for which the people of " dull" Napier deserve renown, it is for the most profound apathy they display in a matter which co?icerns every soul in this favored (?) township. Who is going to represent us in. the next Council ? Nobody knows. Who are to be the five chosen ones of ike capital of Hatch's Bay Province (with its 8000 inhabitants; eh, Mr Editor, thai's good .') ? Nobody cares. Sir, with your permission, I will just draw out a brief " sketch" of tlie likely ones for the Provincial Ccmncil Handicap. To begin, of course this big Scotchman, Donald (not Taylor, of sporting fraternity,) is the favorite. It is set down as \among the things inevitable that tlie Super, will go in at the head cfjhe poll. The next one is — who sholl I say ? — Buchanan. Yes, there is great talk about him, and if he allows himself to be nominated, (of which there is very little doubt), why it is my belief he will secure second hands — that is, of course, barring accidents. Third — Wilkinson is spoken of, but he had a seat for the country last Council, and perhaps will go in for the country again. If not, but on the contrary, tries the town again, it is verg probable he will go in easy. Now for Nos, four and five — Napier returns hit five members. There's not the sliglitest doubt but that if Messrs Colcnso and Edwards (inseparable pair !) allow themselves to be nominated they will stand a very good chance of being placed, even if it is at the tail end of the poll. To tell yon tlie truth, Mr Editor, Zjlo not expect to see either of the two last tlßmed gentlemen an in again, and lam not at all likely to be disappointed. So there must be two others to fill' their seats. I will mention one name and leave it to the Napier electors to find the other. The name I refe.t to is that, of James Meliss Stuart, who has lately returned from the old country. That is all I am going to say at present, Mr Editor. Another week will decide all as far as the town is concerned; therefore it behoves the electors to see to their interests in time. I may state here, sir, th/rt although I have dated that I entertain no hope cf seeing either Cnleneo or Edwards again in our Council, I intend to vote for the former gentleman should he come forward; and, certainly, as a writer in the New Zealand Ecraldiaid, about iwyem aper, " Without Mm
(Mr Colenso) the Provincial Council of Eaaikde I am. & c.. Hotspde. P &—I hose just heard that Reardon, of the “ Green Rootis likely so lea candidate. Perhaps he mil get in. H.
