Hawke's Bay Times. PUBLISHED EVERY MONDAY AND THURSDAY.

MONDAY, 11TH MARCH, 1867. THE PROVINCIAL ELECTIONS.

“ Xulllus addic!ns jurarc in verba mafisiri.”

To-day commences the Election for the new Provincial Council being that of the nomination for the district of YVaimarama, one of the outlying districts of the province, to be followed throughout the month by those for the remaining districts. In another place we give in a tabular form a statement of the days on which the nomination, polling, and declarations d the poll take place for each of the districts into which the Province is divided, together with the number of members returned by each respectively. Tho m6st remarkable thing that strikes us at present is the great apathy that prevails in the public mind concerning the important subject of who shall be their representatives during the period of the next Council. With one exception we know of no meeting of doctors being held for the purpose of taking this into consideration, and with but one exception there are no addresses from intending candidates as yet —as we have said the time for action has actually arrived. Cun it be that a matter of so great importance to the community will be left to almost a chance’ decision on the several election days ? or will advantage be taken of the short time yet at the disposal of the several constituencies to select fit and proper persons to fil’ the onerous and important post d public representative ? We cannot decide but we feel that as the matter now stands, the constitution of the Colony is in the hands of a party, and all the abuses of late Councils threaten to be perpetrated without the most distant prospect of reform.
