Auckland.
(From our own correspondent,] Auckland, Feb. 26, 1867. Business is almost stagnant. Credit scarcely exists. Confidence not to be found. Such may he said of Auckland,in the year 1867. But although the pros pect is very gloomy to the importers, dealers, and retailers, there is encouragement in the fact, that now, more than ever before, vigorous attempts are being made to devolpe the resources of the country, to a considerable extent unavailable hitherto. Auckland's present appearance is that of a garrison town shorn of its garrison. Those who see it in 1870 will probably see it under more favourable auspices. The importers of the immense stores of dutiable goods consumed here may find it hard work to make a profitable market; but if home-grown and home-manufaclured articles come more into fashion, the colony will be the gainer. Politically, affairs are quiet. The Cross rather chafes the Superintendent anent the (supposed) oil springs in or near tho Poverty Bay district; the Herald defends; but the whole is t-nrna /.nmivjrort Wl’tb fnrmpr nofi’fioal r
disputes. Perhaps it is well that it is so. There is a quiet under-current, which points out that the present Superintendent has not fulfilled the ex-
pectations of his constituents ; that many would gladly see him transferred to the General Government us Attorney General, and another Superintendent in his place. For the latter office a contest would be almost inevitable ; but present appearances favour the opinion that a former official would be the chosen, fisc choice might lay between one who has always made
'politics pay, and one who has ruined hinistLJ ( financiallyj by sticking to his : principles. Between such, many electors would have no hesitation in deciding. Honesty and consistency, before talent and uncertainty.
